Nepal is a landlocked developing country, it is facing challenges for its development. The high growth rate of population, high illiteracy rate, high incidence of infectious diseases, high infant mortality rate, difficult geographical structure and low economic growth are some of the main constraints in the national development.
Nepal has a population more than 22 million made of different races and tribes, living in different regions, working different customs and speaks different language and dialects. Being among the least developed countries, Nepal has a per capita income of US$ 202.00. The length of the Kingdom is 885 kilometers east-west and its breath varies from 145 to 241... Kilometers north south.
His Majesty's Government is involved in controlling the prevalent infectious diseases in the country, setting cancer in the less priority group. With the control of communicable diseases, increase in the life expectancy of the people, consciousness about the personal health amongst the masses, identification of carcinogens in the ecology, availability of the diagnostic and curative services in the various health institutions in the country, increasing number of cases of malignant diseases ( Cancer ) are reporting to our hospitals. In the absence of cancer Registry in our hospitals, the exact number of cancer cases could not be predicted with certainty. A rough estimate indicate about 40-50 thousand people suffer from malignant disease (cancer). The incidence is rising every year.
Nepal cancer Relief Society is a nation wide, community based a non profit making voluntary health organization, was founded by late princess Jayanti Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah in the year 1982 with the objective to control, prevent and cure the deadly disease cancer in Nepal, And provide Rehabilitative services to those suffering from cancer .The society has been working through its 32 district branches of the Kingdom, NCRS is planning to increase the numbers of branches to all the 75 districts in the country.
The society has been conducting various awareness programs through its branches, anti smoking camping through the various media available in the country, educating the general Nepalese about the early signs 0f cancer with advice to come to the doctor for the diagnosis treatment at the slightest doubt. The society had played a vital and key role in restriction of tobacco related advertisement from various electronic media and government owned press media, had played as a pressure group to government to ban smoking in the public places and impose 2 paisa tax on every stick of cigarette manufactured in the country. The collection these made is aimed to be used for preventing and treating disease caused by tobacco or tobacco products.
The society has been educating Nepalese people against the use of carcinogens and methods of detecting cancer at its early stage. We are also holding workshops, seminars, and symposium on various aspect of cancer to reorient the health workers about the methods of detecting it at its early stages, advising the patients to go to the proper center for treatment. The society is helping health workers staff nurses and doctors for advance courses and short tram courses in various cancer institutions in India and Abroad.
In the curative side, it has established 25 beds, Bhaktapur Cancer Care Center (Cancer Hospital) in Bhaktapur. Late Majesty the king Birendra Bir Bikram Shadev inaugurated it on 8th October 1999. The society is running this Hospital in association with Rotary Clubs, Rotary international, Bhaktapur Chamber of Commerce, Bhaktapur Municipality, district Development Committee and local people, with the partial funding of HMG, health Ministry, and health tax found. The hospital is providing treatment of Chemotherapy, Radio therapy by cobalt 60, and surgery services. RI donated the radiotherapy machine, from its 3 H, grant program. This hospital is providing free radiotherapy treatment services to poor patient, through the donation raised in UK, by initiation of Mansfield Rotary clubs of UK. And other various NGO and private business entrepreneur are also helping for the development of this hospital. Since this is a nonprofit making center and dedicated to serve poor patient in Nepal, we are very much hopeful to develop it in coming days. |
